Applications: What can we treat with the PDT?

1/Cancer and pre-cancer due to the sun

Principal indications in France and in some CHU (university hospital center) for a few years are:
- actinic keratosis (pre-cancer state of the skin but with a slow evolution) especially when they are numerous and large
- the skin cancer of the baso-cellular carcinomas family, in their superficial form or Bowen type.

Advantages:
- To avoid surgical and radiotherapy interventions.
- To permit treatment often multiple lesions as the actinic keratosis. At present we can treat keratosis with success.
Apart from the principal target which is to cure patients, the PDT is principally interesting, considering other techniques.
- no visible scar.
- no cicatricial dyschromia.
- which is particularly revolutionary in the PDT process is that the ALA or MAL cream will insert more specifically in sick keratinocyts and respect the cells of the normal skin. With that process we have a targeted, quick, reproduced and secure action.

2/Photo rejuvenation

Another PDT action is to boost the photo rejuvenation effect that we search to obtain with yet known techniques (flash lamp, LED diode and peeling). It allows reducing the number of sessions. We can’t say that the PDT has a tense or lift effect because it respects the fibroblast which is the base of the collagen forming, nevertheless it plays an indirect role in inducing a smooth effect.

3/Acne

The PDT is an alternative to the acne treatment particularly inflammatory. It can speed the effect of the classical dermatologic techniques and also boost the blue/red light effects which are yet use without adding photosensitive creams (ALA or MAL).
Others indications are in studies like psoriasis, warts, lymphomas, mucinosis, porokeratosis.
